Production Designer for 'Dr G and the Singulatity Engine'

In 2015 I had my first go at being a Production Designer for my university assignment 'The House Project'. I worked alongside a film team from the Film and Television course at my university, who scripted, directed and shot the whole thing. My input was art department based as I managed a small team which consisted of an Art Directors, Props Maker, Set Dresser and

Props Master.

I collaborated with the director when designing what the set would look like. The short film was set in the 1950's and the set was the basement of a scientist who was building a time travel machine. I wanted the set to look very cluttered at messy, which helped to reflect the characteristics of Dr. G. I also wanted to build a time machine to feature in the set. It could've been easier to use special effects to insert and time machine into the set. Nevertheless, I was optimistic in building one from scratch with my props maker.

Once the design for the set was decided, my collaboration focus was with my Art Director to source furniture, props and other materials for the set. We had a budget of £200 to purchase everything require for the set. Most of the materials wire either hired or bought as second hand. It was important all materials for the set matched the time period in which the film was based. My research allowed for me to source the correct materials efficiently as I knew what I was looking for.

I enjoyed this project the most out of all of my University assignments. I allowed me to practise creative skills which I had no idea I had and allowed me to gain a true love for set design, particularly those from a different time period.

This is something that I hope to continue professional once I graduate.
