Costume Design

During the second year at university, I was encouraged to try new things, develop new skills and through myself into production roles that I had never tried before.

Therefore, for one my assignments, I put myself forward to be a costume designer. The production was based on a book by Yvvette Edwards called 'A Cupboard Full of Coats'. The book was divided into 12 separate productions. The section that I worked on only included 3 characters, and it was set in the living room of the main character Jinx. I worked within a very small and tight budget, and most of the clothes were either borrowed, recycled or bought from second-hand shops.

I learnt how to successfully take the measurements of each actor/actress, and related these measurements to the clothes I was buying. I was only allocated one fitting before the shoot date, therefore it was crucial that all of the costumes fitted each person. The hardest costume to source was the suit, as there was a lot of measurements to consider. I did have to tailor the suit slightly in the end, as the arms and trouser lengths were too long. Nevertheless, I learnt that it is better to have a costume that is slightly too big than too small - as it's easier to amend.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed this role, and I am so please that I gave it a go and allowed myself to learn something new, I feel as though my other skills are more advance and worth while sharing.
